MicroLED displays: The path to high-volume manufacturing

Pixel-Flo, a spin-off from the University of Sheffield in the UK, has secured £5.25 million (approximately €6.15 million) in seed funding. The company says its proprietary continuous-flow mass transfer technology addresses a key bottleneck in the manufacturing of microLED displays.

The widespread adoption of microLEDs is currently limited by the scalability of conventional mechanical mass transfer processes. According to the company, Pixel-Flo is developing a highly scalable and cost-efficient manufacturing approach for microLED displays. Future displays based on the technology are expected to deliver two to five times higher brightness and two to four times greater energy efficiency than conventional displays. This could significantly reduce both processing and material costs.

According to Pixel-Flo, the technology is based on two proprietary elements: a microLED ink and an extension of existing coating equipment. The aim is to enable the manufacturing process to be scaled more efficiently to larger display formats.

According to the company, the funding round was led by Northern Gritstone, with additional investments from SCVC, the Parkwalk Northern Universities Venture Fund and the High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF).
