Laser welding without safety enclosure

With its new laser welding optic SCW (safe component welding), Scansonic MI enables laser welding without the need for a conventional laser safety enclosure. The compact processing unit complies with the requirements of laser class 1. For this purpose, a specially developed protective attachment is mounted on the optics: A molded nozzle surrounds the welding area to prevent the exposure of hazardous laser radiation. The nozzle is individually adapted to the geometry of the specific workpiece.
According to the manufacturer, this ensures continuous protection of operating personnel without requiring additional enclosures. Only a basic robot safety cell is necessary, which should significantly reduce overall costs compared to conventional laser welding systems.
Integrated image recognition covers a working area of 5 mm x 25 mm, allowing for precise determination of the welding position via a teach process. Another key element of the system is the comprehensive safety system: a redundant sensor setup continuously measures the distance between the workpiece and the molded nozzle. If the limit of 0.2 mm is exceeded, the laser source is not activated. The solution is designed to meet all requirements for industrial series production.
The new SCW optics are available as a fully integrated solution, including the control system (with safety components), laser source from Brightlight Laser, cooling, and extraction, so the manufacturer.
