Glossary for Non-Trekkies
Bird-of-Prey – Klingon warship with cloaking device; in the podcast, a humorous hook for photonics topics such as metamaterials and invisibility.
“Fascinating” (Spock) – Mr. Spock’s legendary comment: matter-of-fact, yet appreciative.
Holodeck – a virtual space on the Enterprise capable of simulating any environment. In the podcast, it serves as a stage for absurd AI scenarios.
Klingons – a warlike race from Star Trek, known for honor, directness, and prominent foreheads. Klingon intelligence serves here as a humorous metaphor for the exaggerated, sometimes threatening side of AI.
Redshirts – Crew members in red uniforms who, in the original series, were often the first to die on dangerous missions. Today, they symbolize expendable characters.
Tribbles – Small, furry creatures that purr peacefully but reproduce uncontrollably—chaos is inevitable. In the podcast, they symbolize AI that suddenly gets out of control.
Tricorder – the Enterprise’s multifunctional measuring device that analyzes physical and biological data. Here, a point of comparison for modern sensor technology and AI-supported measurement technology.
Warp drive – fictional faster-than-light propulsion in the Star Trek universe. Distorts space to reach destinations faster than light; in the podcast, a symbol of technological acceleration.
