New color filter technology for image sensors

For decades, image sensors have used red, green and blue color filters on pixels to create our everyday color images and videos. However, color filters block a large portion of the incoming light, limiting the sensitivity of the camera. In addition, they limit the scaling of the pixel size to less than around 0.5 micrometers. In smartphone cameras, manufacturers have compensated for this limitation by enlarging the sensor – and therefore the camera – to capture more light. Although this improves performance in low light conditions, it also leads to larger and bulkier cameras. Compact, high-sensitivity image sensors are essential for slimmer smartphones and new applications such as robotics and AR/VR devices, where size, energy efficiency and image quality are critical.
Eyeo, a spin-off of the Belgian research institute Imec, has now reportedly received 15 million euros in seed capital under the joint management of Imec.xpand and Invest-NL, with the participation of the QBIC fund, the High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) and the Brabant Development Agency (BOM).

Color-splitting via vertical waveguides

Eyeo introduces a novel image sensor architecture that eliminates the need for conventional color filters, maximizing sensitivity without increasing sensor size. Using vertical waveguide-based technology that splits light into its colors, Eyeo is developing sensors that efficiently capture and utilize all incoming light, tripling sensitivity compared to existing technologies, according to the company. In contrast to conventional filters that block certain colors, the waveguide technology is said to enable the pixels to receive complete color data. According to Eyeo, this approach instantly doubles resolution and delivers sharper, more detailed images for applications that require precision, such as computational photography, machine vision and spatial computing.
“Eyeo is fundamentally redefining image sensing by removing decades-old limitations,” says Jeroen Hoet, CEO of Eyeo. “Capturing all incident light and dramatically improving resolution is just the beginning – this technology paves the way for completely new applications in imaging, from ultra-compact sensors and improved low-light performance to ultra-high resolution and maximum image quality. We are not only improving existing systems, but creating a new standard for the future of imaging.”

Market readiness and roadmap

Eyeo says it has already partnered with leading image sensor manufacturers and foundries to ensure the successful commercialization of its technology. The €15 million seed funding will be used to further improve current camera sensor designs, optimize waveguide technology for production scalability and accelerate prototype development for evaluation. By working closely with industry leaders, Eyeo aims to make its advanced camera sensors available for a wide range of applications, from smartphones and VR glasses to any compact device that uses color cameras. The first evaluation kits are expected to be available to selected customers within the next two years.
