Customized 8-axis positioner for optical inspection

The high-precision 8-axis positioner from Steinmeyer Mechatronik offers a wide range of adjustment options and can be fully adapted to the customer’s individual application. The positioning system realizes a rotary scanning movement of rotationally symmetrical optics and has a free aperture of 45 mm for this purpose. Alignment and measurement are thus performed on the active beam path.

Tilt and lateral corrections in two axes

According to the manufacturer, a special feature of the system is that the position of the lens on the turntable can be tilted in two axes perpendicular to the optical axis and also laterally corrected in two axes. Tilts of up to 1.5° and a lateral offset of up to 2 mm can be corrected. The position of the measuring sensor can be adjusted in angle and distance (focus). Thus, second-order errors can be minimized or an optic with the optimal beam path with not fully concentric mount can be measured, states the manufacturer. A global vertical adjustment of the sensor makes it possible to measure optics of different thicknesses. According to the manufacturer, repeatability is in the sub-µm range. Thanks to air bearings, the rotary stage is said to achieve accuracies of up to 0.0005°. A very stiff vertical stroke supports the manual angle adjustment with motorized distance adjustment for the sensor. This is said to allow even relatively heavy measurement equipment such as confocal sensors or digital microscopes to be used universally for measurement.

Custom adaptation and manufacturing

According to the manufacturer, the 8-axis positioner can be adapted to specific applications and inspection tasks – from the integration of any measuring sensors and specimen holders to an individual design with frame, vibration isolation and housing, to wireless power and signal transmission and integration in workflows via PLC or PC control. The manufacturer’s engineering services includes finding fully individual customer solutions and designing them in 3D.

According to the manufacturer, the positioner is suitable for the flexible design of compact optical inspection systems, for example for quality assurance or in cleanrooms, laboratories or production.
