XYZ tool positioning over a large area

With the XYZ-Gantry GantX, Owis addresses positioning applications that require dynamics, repeatability, and flexible configuration. Two synchronized X-axes and one Z-axis on the bridge enable an overhead-guided positioning with stationary objects. GantX is particularly suitable for sensitive or large workpieces.
GantX is based on the Linpos series by Owis. The gantry combines ironless linear motors with high-resolution absolute measurement technology and precise recirculating ball guides. Owis thus achieves positioning accuracies of less than 50 µm and repeat accuracies of less than 0.5 µm. Travel speeds reach up to 1400 mm/s – with a maximum acceleration of 10 m/s², even with high loads.
The design featuring a moving machining head is intended to minimize vibrations and improve process stability. GantX is therefore particularly suitable when object movement needs to be avoided, for example in optical metrology, sensitive micro-machining, or semiconductor technology.
Owis configures GantX individually: travel distances, axis layout, interfaces, and control can be adapted to customer-specific requirements. According to the manufacturer, an optional granite base, additional axes, or integration into existing automation solutions are possible. Interfaces such as EtherCAT and CANopen as well as parameterized motor drivers enhance connectivity.
The GantX positioning system’s architecture allows for scalable travel distances, making it adaptable to different application scenarios. The two X-axes are synchronized using software-supported control algorithms. Owis uses ironless linear motors to avoid cogging torque and ensure smooth movement.
For customers in research, industry, and the OEM environment, Owis supplies the GantX as an individually configured complete system with a preconfigured control module. Upon request, mechanical integration using a vibration-damping base is available. Closed cable management protects moving cables from wear during continuous operation. The modular design allows additional axes to be added for multi-axis applications.
