12 Jan. Hexapod H-815 addresses industrial 24/7 processes
The H-815 industrial hexapod by Physik Instrumente (PI) has been designed for precision-critical manufacturing processes with high cycle counts. According to the manufacturer, the parallel-kinematic precision system with six degrees of freedom was specifically developed for use in automated 24/7 processes: with a repeat accuracy of ±0.05 µm, a minimum step size of 50 nm, and integrated absolute encoders.
Typical applications include the assembly of lenses and camera modules, the automated alignment of optical components, positioning in clean-room or OEM environments, as well as test and calibration processes in quality control. The parallel kinematic system offers six precisely controllable degrees of freedom and carries payloads of up to 10 kg. According to the manufacturer, the free-definable pivot point allows the motion platform to be precisely adapted to specific requirements, such as alignment on a micrometer scale.
Thanks to the absolute encoders, the H-815 provides position data without referencing at system start-up, as well as after power failures or restarts. Integrated brakes ensure reliable handling and process safety. The H-815 is controlled via the C-887.4xx1 motion controller in conjunction with PIMikroMove software. The controller’s safety features include SIL-3 certification and a connection for safety relays, which, according to the supplier, enable the hexapod to be used in safety-critical applications. Optionally, the motion controller can be equipped with high-resolution, fast analog inputs for precise alignment routines.

The system also features a robust design with high-quality components, offering reliable durability even with a high number of operating cycles. According to Ziegler, integrated brakes and SIL 3 safety standards support safe handling and process reliability. Ziegler adds: “Even in space-critical applications, the H-815 impresses with its high repeatability and precision, combining considerable power and speed in a compact design.”
