In electrode manufacturing, lasers cut and weld the electrode foils. In cell assembly, especially when joining different material connections of current-carrying components, they ensure quality and yield. In the production of battery modules and packs, lasers are the decisive tools for creating fast, strong, and repeatable connections to the busbars.
Lasers also enable users to reliably and gas-tightly weld cooling plates for electric car batteries in series production. For recycling, batteries can be disassembled using ­laser processes to enable valuable components and materials to be reused. Lasers precisely cut open battery housings and selectively remove adhesive surfaces. In addition, laser-based removal of coatings enables efficient processing of rejects from electrode production in order to recover valuable materials such as lithium, cobalt, or graphite.
Beam shaping methods such as Trumpf’s multifocus technology are suitable for gas-tight welding of cooling plates in series production. By sending the laser light through a so-called multi-core fiber and then focusing it onto a patented arrangement of multiple focus points via an optical element, beam shaping prevents pores and small holes that would have a fatal impact on the function of the cooling plates. Multifocus technology divides the laser beam into an outer ring and an inner core. This allows the laser’s power to be distributed very precisely. Users can thus weld stainless steel and aluminum cooling plates at high speed. “Our customers benefit from guaranteed tightness, increased production efficiency, and precise welding results,” says Johannes Bührle, who is in charge of battery projects at Trumpf.
